new Target store in Warrington, Pennsylvania, will easily attract
attention from the nearby road. Split face and smooth concrete masonry
units, in 6"
(150 mm) and 8"
(200 mm) heights, provide the perfect backdrop for the bright red Target
logo. The logo is further accentuated with a red band which travels the
complete length of the store.
The entrance of the store is dramatized with chocolate colored units, accented with creme colored units and punctuated with red units. The remainder of the building is primarily creme, which helps to reduce the mass of the project. The thousands of concrete masonry units used to complete this Target were produced by Fizzano Brothers Concrete Products, Inc. The company operates three Besser equipped plants in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, area. About Target Target emphasizes basic merchandise that consumers use and need most. Combined with an aggressive fashion strategy, this foundation in basics enables Target to compete as a life-style trend merchandiser in all merchandise categories. Unique among mass merchandisers, Target has department store roots. In 1961, Dayton’s department store identified demand for a store that offered well-known national brands at discounted prices, in a quick, convenient format. On 1 May 1962, the first Target store opened in Roseville, Minnesota, a suburb of St. Paul. Currently, Target operates nearly 900 stores in 44 states, including Target Greatland stores and SuperTarget stores. States with the largest store counts include California, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota and Texas. The greatest areas of growth are in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States. Target Stores are a division of Target Corporation, one of the nation’s largest general merchandise retailers. Other divisions include Mervyn’s California® and the Department Stores Division (Dayton’s®, Hudson’s® and Marshall Field’s®). Corporate 1998 revenue was US $30.95 billion.
